ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine if SEM used with imaging software could be used to quantitatively determine the extent of dentine roughness due to tooth-brushing. Material and methods: Flat, polished dentine surfaces were subjected to 25,000 cycles of simulated tooth-brushing at 2 strokes per second with a load of 200 g. At the end of the brushing cycle, dentine surfaces were first assessed using profilometry and then subjected to SEM analysis. Ra (average roughness) readings were obtained for profilometric assessment. Using imaging software, the horizontal distance between adjacent characteristic grooves noted on micrographs was measured, ensuring that the middle of each crest of the associated groove was used as the reference point, the Crest-to-Crest distance (C-C distance). These two parameters were examined statistically for correlation. Results: When Spearman Rank tests were utilized the correlation between average Ra and crest to crest measurements was 0.709 (p <0.01). The Bland Altman plot, however, showed poor agreement between the two test parameters. Conclusion: Further work is needed to validate the use of this methodology in the quantitative assessment of tooth surface loss due to abrasion (AU)

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of commercially available whitening toothpastes containing charcoal on dentin. Nine charcoal-containing toothpastes were compared with 3 whitening toothpastes (positive control) and distilled water (negative control). Periodontally hopeless molars were cleaned and washed and the occlusal table removed to expose dentin. The teeth were mounted in auto-polymerizing resin and exposed dentine surfaces polished with water-cooled decreasing grits of silica carbide paper up to 1500 grit. Baseline average roughness (Ra) measurements were taken. Specimens were then mounted in an automatic tooth-brushing machine and brushed for 5000 cycles. Repeat Ra measurements were taken. Specimens were brushed in 5000-cycle increments up to 25,000 cycles with Ra measurements being taken at each time point. Between abrasive challenges specimens were stored in distilled water. All toothpaste samples were sputter coated and examined under a scanning electron microscope to qualify the shape and size of the abrasive components of the formulations. Data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance with post hoc Bonferroni. The results demonstrated that the abrasive effect, in terms of increasing Ra, on dentin was noted as early as 5000 cycles for all the tested toothpastes (p<0.05). The effect of continued brushing showed an overall cumulative effect on dentine roughness up to 25000 cycles. When toothpastes were compared between groups at each time-point, dentin specimens brushed with Pursito were statistically similar to the control group. At 25,000 cycles all dentin samples were significantly rougher compared to Pursito and the control groups. It may be concluded that all the tested toothpastes have an abrasive effect on dentin surfaces.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the failure behavior of 3 mol.% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) prosthetic crowns air-abraded with aluminum oxide (AO) particles of different sizes. Ninety ceramic premolar crowns were produced with 3Y-TZP frameworks veneered with porcelain. Crowns were randomly divided into three groups, according to the size of the air abrasion AO particles (n = 30): (GC) untreated (control); (G53) 53 µm; (G125) 125 µm. Air abrasion was performed with 0.25 mpa pressure, 10-mm distance, for 10 s. Crowns were adhesively cemented to dentin analog abutments. Specimens were loaded in compression to failure, in 37oC distilled water, using a universal testing machine (n = 30). Fractographic analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope and SEM. The roughness of the crown's inner surface was evaluated using an optical profilometer (n = 10). Fracture load data were statistically analyzed with Weibull analysis and roughness data with Kruskal-Wallis (α = 0.05). GC had the lowest characteristic fracture load (L0), while G53 and G125 had higher and statistically similar L0 values. The Weibull modulus (m) was similar among groups. The failure modes observed were catastrophic failure and porcelain chipping. There were no differences between the roughness parameters for the experimental groups (p > 0.05). The size of the AO particles did not affect the fracture load and failure mode of 3Y-TZP crowns. Air abrasion with 53 µm and 125 µm particles resulted in a higher fracture load of ceramic crowns than the untreated group while maintaining their reliability and surface characteristics.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate the effect of novel zirconia surface treatment method on shear bond strength between zirconia and veneering porcelain compared to air abrasion and CoJet surface treatment methods. Material and Methods: twenty-one zirconia ceramic discs were fabricated with diameter of 7mm and 3mm thickness and divided according to surface treatment into three subgroups, control group I: Air Abrasion (n=7), group II: CoJet (n=7) and group III: Z-etch (n=7). Porcelain was built over the zirconia specimens with a customized mold and fired in a ceramic furnace. All specimens were thermocycled (20000 cycles) between 5°C 55 °C with a dwell time of 30 seconds in distilled water and shear bond strength of veneering porcelain to each zirconia specimen was tested using a universal testing machine. Results: numerical data were explored for normality by checking the distribution of data and using tests of normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests). One-way ANOVA test was used to compare between the groups. There was a statistically significant difference between the three groups (P-value = 0.002, Effect size = 0.503). Pair-wise comparisons between groups revealed that Z-etch showed the statistically significantly highest mean shear bond strength. Conclusion: zirconia coating using z-etch is showing promising results in promoting higher bond strength than conventional surface treatment methods as air abrasion and silica coating (AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Dental hard tissue conditions can be of pre- or post-eruptive nature, such as enamel fluorosis and erosive tooth wear (ETW), respectively. Dental enamel fluorosis is caused by the chronic and excessive intake of fluoride during enamel development, leading to increased fluoride concentration and increased porosity. ETW has become a common clinical condition and often impairs dental function and aesthetics. This in vitro study tested the hypothesis that fluorotic enamel presents different susceptibility to dental erosion-abrasion. It consisted of a 3×3×2 factorial design, considering a) fluorosis severity: sound (TF0), mild (TF1-2), moderate (TF3-4); b) abrasive challenge: low, medium, and high; and c) erosive challenge: yes or no. A total of 144 human teeth were selected according to the three fluorosis severity levels (n=48), and subdivided into six groups (n = 8) generated by the association of the different erosive and abrasive challenges. Enamel blocks (4×4 mm) were prepared from each tooth and their natural enamel surfaces subjected to an erosion-abrasion cycling model. After cycling, the depth of the lesions in enamel was assessed by profilometry. ANOVA showed that the three-way and two-way interactions among the factors were not significant (p > 0.20). Enamel fluorosis level (p=0.638) and abrasion level (p = 0.390) had no significant effect on lesion depth. Acid exposure caused significantly more enamel surface loss than water (p < 0.001). Considering the limitations of this in vitro study, fluorosis did not affect the susceptibility of enamel to dental erosion-abrasion.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is characterized by rapid, acute pain arising from exposed dental tubules. Aim: the aim of this study was to evaluate the roughness, tubule occlusion, and permeability of eroded dentin brushed with different toothpastes. Materials and Method: ninety bovine teeth were cut into blocks. Thirty hemifaces were protected with varnish and the other sixty were submitted to permeability tests. Specimens were divided into groups according to the dentifrices: without fluoride (WF), sodium fluoride (NaF), and stannous fluoride (SnF2). The blocks were subjected to a 5-day erosive-abrasive protocol. Surface roughness and dentinal tubule occlusion (n=10) were assessed for both control and test hemifaces of the same sample along with permeability analysis (n=20). Two-way RM ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test were performed (p≤0.05). Results: NaF and SnF2 presented higher roughness than WF. The number of open tubules was higher in WF. Permeability was higher in SnF2, but there was no significant difference between WF and NaF. Conclusions: both fluoride toothpastes occluded dentinal tubules and increased roughness. NaF toothpaste promoted greater decrease in dentin permeability.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To assess the effect of different mechanical surface treatments on flexural strength of repaired denture base. Material and Methods: Sixty bar-shaped specimens of heat-polymerized acrylic resin were fabricated, and divided into six groups (n=10). All specimens, except the positive control group (group PC), were sectioned into halves to create a 1-mm clearance. A negative control group with no surface treatment (group NC) was also considered. Other groups underwent different surface treatments: group Laser; treated with erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser, group APA; airborne-particle abrasion (APA), group APA plus Laser; a combination of laser and APA, and group Bur; bur grinding. After measuring surface roughness (Ra) with a profilometer, all sectioned specimens were repaired by auto-polymerizing acrylic resin, and thermocycled afterward. Three-point bending test was performed by a universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed (α=0.05). Results: The mean surface roughness of all experimental groups were significantly higher than that of group NC (p<0.05). The mean flexural strength of all groups was significantly lower than that of group PC (p<0.05). Group B had significantly higher flexural strength than the other surface-treated groups (p<0.05). Group Laser had significantly higher flexural strength than groups APA (p=0.043) and APA plus Laser (p=0.023). No significant difference was found between groups APA and APA plus Laser (p=0.684). Conclusion: All surface treatments increased the surface roughness and flexural strength compared with the untreated group. The highest flexural strength was observed in specimens treated by bur grinding and then laser, however, it was still significantly lower than intact specimens.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: although reports on dental erosion have appeared in literature for a long time, there is currently a growing interest among researchers and clinicians about this matter. Potential risk factors for loss of dental hard tissue are changed lifestyle and eating patterns, with increased consumption of acid foods and beverages. Case report: an atypical tooth wear on the buccal surfaces of the mandibular teeth in a 45-year-old woman referred for orthodontic treatment, associated with the frequent consumption of whiskey and lemon, is reported. A comprehensive approach, such as the recognition of dental erosion joined with a careful investigation about eating habits was performed. Ultrastructural examination of replicas of the teeth showed practically structureless enamel and dentin surfaces. Conclusion: the screening for dental erosion in patients seeking orthodontic treatment is advisable to be a usual procedure. Recommendations for treatment and prophylactic measures are made emphasizing the need of multiprofessional attention.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT @#Restorative treatment is very challenging for non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) due to functional and structural complexities. The purpose of this randomised controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the clinical performance of nanocomposite restorations bonded using universal adhesive in self-etch mode with and without air abrasive surface treatment for NCCLs. A total of 70 NCCLs, from a group of consenting patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, were recruited for the study. The study was carried out following CONSORT guidelines. Block randomisation was done for equal allocation of lesions into; Group 1 (surface treatment with alumina air abrasion) and Group 2 (control group without mechanical surface treatment). The lesions were restored with nanocomposite using a universal bonding agent in self-etch mode. The clinical performance of the restorations was evaluated by two examiners using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria at baseline, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. A Chi-square test was performed for inter-group comparison. Cochran’s Q test and Dunn’s post hoc analysis were used for intra-group comparison. The inter-group comparison revealed no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control group for all the parameters assessed. With the intra-group analysis, it was found that there was a significant decrease in the performance of the restorations concerning marginal staining, marginal adaptation and surface texture during the evaluation period (p < 0.05). However, all of them demonstrated clinically acceptable performance. According to the results of this RCT, it was concluded that airborne particle abrasion of NCCLs did not improve the clinical performance of nanocomposite resin bonded using universal adhesive.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: acrylic resin artificial teeth are widely used in the manufacture of dentures, as they have physical, mechanical and biological properties, in addition to easy handling characteristics. However, due to its characteristic of low abrasion resistance, brushing can lead to loss of mass of artificial teeth and increase in roughness. Objective: qualitatively evaluate the surface roughness and polishing of artificial teeth of Hereaus Premium brands; Trilux and Vita, after a 1-year brushing period, with photographs using a Stereoscopic Magnifying Glass. Methodology: for this study, 10 artificial teeth of each commercial brand will be used (Trilux, Vita and Hereaus Premium). Teeth will be fixed with orthophthalic resin in a 15 mm thick PVC tube. For the abrasion test, a simulated brushing machine with soft bristle toothbrushes and toothpaste solution will be used. Images will be obtained with a digital camera coupled to a stereoscopic magnifying glass. Surface roughness and polishing will be analyzed before simulated brushing and after 12 months of brushing through the images. Results: after the abrasion test, the presence of surface wear and/ or grooves on the surface of the artificial teeth was observed in all groups. However, there was no similar pattern between the specimens of the same group. Conclusion: it can be concluded that brushing caused an increase in surface roughness and change in polishing in all artificial teeth used.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and adhesive approaches on the microshear bond strength of resin cement to a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN). Methods: PICN blocks were randomly assigned into 9 groups (n=10): CTRL: no treatment; HF: 5% hydrofluoric acid etching; HF-S: HF + silane; HF-S-A: HF-S + adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2); HF-UA: HF + universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal); SB: sandblasting with 50 µm Al2O3 particles; SB-S: SB + silane; SB-S-A: SB-S + adhesive; SB-UA: SB + universal adhesive. Resin cement microcylinders (Ø = 0.96 mm; height = 1 mm) (RelyX Ultimate) were built upon the PICN surface after roughness and contact angle measurements. Next, microshear bonding tests (µSBS) were performed (0.5 mm/min) after water storage (37ºC, 90 days) and thermocycling (12,000 cycles; 5ºC-55ºC). Failure modes were observed under stereomicroscope. Bond strength data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA/Tukey's test and t-tests. Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn's tests were conducted for roughness and contact angle data (α = 0.05). Results: A rougher surface and lower contact angles were observed for Sandblasting. HF-S (18.54 ± 2.03 MPa), SB-S (19.00 ± 1.66 MPa) and SB-UA (18.07 ± 2.36 MPa) provided the highest bond strength values, followed by the other treated groups. The CTRL group resulted in lower bond strength (7.18 ± 2.34 MPa). Conclusion: Hydrofluoric acid etching followed by silane application and sandblasting followed by silane or universal adhesive are useful clinical steps to enhance bonding to PICN. Adhesive applications after HF etching have no advantages in bonding to PICN

ABSTRACT

Introduction: whitening dentifrices have been developed to offer an aesthetic improvement, however because of their high abrasiveness, may develop adverse effects on the surface of restorative materials, may develop adverse effects on the surface of restorative materials, such as increased surface roughness, compromising the survival of restorations. Objective: analyze the roughness and mass loss of two laboratory composite resins subjected to brushing with distilled water (control) and with abrasive dentifrice (AD), Colgate Luminous White®. Methodology: were prepared 20 samples, 20 from light-curing resin Opallis Lab® and 20 from blocks for CAD/CAM system (Brava Block®), divided into four groups: Opallis Lab® + distilled water, Opallis Lab® + AD, Brava Block® + distilled water, Brava Block® + AD. The samples were weighed and the roughness measured before and after brushing. A brushing machine was used in 14,690 cycles simulating 1 year of brushing. Data were tabulated and analyzed for variance (ANOVA) and later performed the Tukey test, comparing the means, two to two. Results: as for the AD, the light-curing resin presented borderline behavior compared to the control group, when the CAD/CAM block was statistically significant. In both, the roughness decreased in the control group while in the test group it increased. The weight loss was only statistically significant in the light-cured resin. When comparing the types of resin, there wasn't statistical significance as for roughness and weight loss. Conclusion: the tested resins have similar behaviors, but abrasive dentifrices are not recommended for brushing restorative materials, because they interfere negatively in the roughness.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Non-carious lesions are an oral health problem in adults, consequently it is necessary to create mechanisms for their diagnosis and prevention. Objective: To determine the frequency of erosion, abrasion and related factors in patients treated at a university dental clinic. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 153 adults treated at a university clinic in Lima, Peru, in 2018. Personal aspects (age, sex, characteristics of saliva), dietary factors, health condition, oral habits, and tooth brushing were identified. The presence of abrasion was determined according to clinical criteria through direct observation. Erosion was identified using the Basic Erosive Wear index. Generalized linear models with Poisson distribution with robust variances were used. Results: The frequency of dental abrasion (70.6%) is higher than erosion (26.1%). The presence of erosion is associated with asthma (PR= 2.11), abrasion is related to age and poor dental hygiene habits (PR= 1.67 and 1.30, respectively). Conclusion: The presence of dental abrasion is greater than dental erosion. Age and poor dental habits are factors associated with tooth abrasion. The characteristics of saliva regarding pH and salivary flow were within normal p-values.

ABSTRACT

Tooth whitening can be performed at the dental office, at-home or upon the use of OTC (Over-the-Counter) pro-ducts. Among the latter, there are whitening toothpastes that promise to bleach and to prevent tooth staining. Objectives: (1) To investigate the bleaching and abrasive potential of different whitening dentifrices to enamel; and (2) to evaluate the effect of Oral-B 3D White Perfection®(Oral-B) toothpaste in preventing staining. Materials and Methods: Bovine enamel samples were stained and brushed for 14 days with water (negative control) or with different products: Colgate Total 12® (control), Oral-B, Sensodyne Branqueador Extra Fresh® (Sensodyne), and Colgate Luminous White Advanced® (Colgate). Oral-B was also tested before and after staining. The samples were tested by their color (spectrophotometer) and surface roughness (profilometer). Color change (ΔDE00) was cal-culated using the CIEDE2000 color system. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, SNK, and Mann-Whitney tests (α=5%). Results: The negative control showed the lowest ΔE00 (p<0.05), whereas the group treated with Sensodyne resulted in the greatest color change (p<0.05). For surface roughness, there was not any significant difference among the groups. The Oral-B toothpaste showed a protective effect against staining, resulting in the lowest color change (p=0,002). Conclusion: Only Sensodyne toothpaste showed higher whitening potential than the conventional toothpaste. By using Oral-B prior staining reduced significantly the intensity of staining, although without the complete prevention of this event. Significant differences were not observed after treatment concerning roughness in comparison to the control.

ABSTRACT

Background:Abrasives are the insoluble components added to dentifrices to aid the physical removal of stains, plaque and food debris. However, replete of abrasivity cause enamel abrasion, dentin hypersensitivity, damaging the smile as well as masticatory apparatus. The aim of this study is to evaluate the enamel surface abrasivity using three different herbal dentifrices and a customised brushing machine under profilometer.Materials And Method:A total of 30 enamel blocks are prepared from buccal surface of maxillary central incisor which are randomly divided into three groups. Group-1 Specimensbrushed with Colgate Vedshakti, Group-2 Specimens brushed withPatanjali Dant Kanti, Group-3 Specimens brushed with Dabur Red. All specimens were brushed using a customised brushing model with Oral-B powered brush for 30 minutes. Surface roughness of all three groups specimens were analysed using a surfaceroughness tester-profilometer. Statistical analysis used in this study was one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc turkey’s test. Results:Statistically significant difference was observed in value of enamel abrasion amongst Group1, 2 and 3. (p<0.05)Conclusion:Toothpaste with higher relative enamel abrasivity has the potential to abrade the enamel and cause hypersensitivity. The least enamel abrasion was observed in Colgate Vedshakti when compared with Patanjali Dant Kanti and Dabur Red toothpaste.

ABSTRACT

The term noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) refers to the loss of hard tooth tissue at the Cemento-Enamel Junction (CEJ), whose etiology is not related to bacterial involvement. The origin and progression of these cervical defects are considered multifactorial, being attributed to three main factors: abfraction, biocorrosion and abrasion. Such factors may be combined and associated with excessive force events applied during brushing, along with the abrasiveness of dentifrices, eating and/or parafunctional habits. These lesions may have different morphologies according to their main etiological factor, and may be wedge-shaped, oval or rounded. Our aim in this paper was to perform a literature review in order to present the challenges of the dental surgeon in identifying the different etiological factors of NCCL. Such challenge regards the study of the combination of these factors, as well as the achievement of an accurate diagnosis, requiring adequate knowledge of the etiology in order to prevent future lesions, stagnate existing ones, thus enabling the Dental Surgeon to treat NCCL effectively in the long term. However, there are still many controversies in the literature, making it necessary to develop more studies to elucidate the etiology of NCCL
